Gutzon Borglund first saw the site in 1924 and the first actual carving began on October 4, 1927. Washington was dedicated in 1934, Jefferson in 1936, Lincoln in 1937, and Theodore Roosevelt in 1939, but the project still required years and years of work to complete it. Borglund died in March of 1941 and his son Lincoln worked on it for another seven months.
Originally, it was supposed to show all four presidents to the waist, but funds ran out, and it remains today as it was when completed in 1941.
