The Franciscan order, primarily, were the missionaries who established many missions in the Southwest and in Florida. They frequently traveled with the Spanish conquistadors for that purpose. The Jesuits also established a number of missions in the Southwest. Padre Kino was a Jesuit who established a number of Missions in California. Padre Junipero Serra was a Franciscan who also established missions in the Southwest U.S.
Spanish missions were never established in Georgia. The mission system was established in the southwest and western regions of the United States in the 1700's.

Most of the missions in Indian Territory during the early to middle 1800s were established by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM). This organization aimed to spread Christianity among Native American populations and played a significant role in the establishment of schools and churches. Their efforts were part of a larger movement to assimilate Native Americans into Euro-American culture.
