Arlington is a US military cemetery, so almost all of those buried there are soldiers, sailors, airmen, and their families, including those who became prominent after their military service.

Those interred in the cemetery or on the grounds include:

  • President William Howard Taft (1857-1930), previously Chief Justice of the United States
  • President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), his wife Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1930-1994), and his brothers Robert Kennedy (1925-1968) and Edward Kennedy (1932-2009)
  • George Washington Parke Custis, grandson of Martha Washington, who founded Arlington Plantation, which is now the cemetery
  • Robert Todd Lincoln, son of Abraham Lincoln, and Secretary of War
  • John "Black Jack" Pershing (1860-1948), World War I commander
  • Omar Bradley (1893-1981) World War II commander and General of the Army
  • George Marshall (1880-1959), general and rebuilder of Europe, Secretary of State, and Secretary of Defense
  • William Rehnquist (1924-2005), Chief Justice of the United States
  • Audie Murphy (1924-1971), actor and most decorated soldier of World War II
  • Lee Marvin (1924-1987) actor and decorated US Marine
  • Robert Peary (1856-1920), polar explorer
  • Glenn Miller (1904-1944), bandleader and Army Air Force officer
  • Astronauts Virgil "Gus" Grissom, John Chaffee (Apollo 1 fire), Michael Smith (Challenger), Francis "Dick" Scobee (Challenger), and Charles "Pete" Conrad, 3rd man to walk on the Moon
  • Abner Doubleday, Civil War General and developer of baseball
  • Joe Louis (1914-1981) heavyweight champion boxer, Legion of Merit
  • Medgar Evers (1925-1963), murdered civil rights activist
  • Phyllis Kirk (1927-2006), actress, widow of CBS executive Warren Bush (USAAF)
  • Grace Hopper (1906-1902) Commodore (USN), computer pioneer
