Why did the US build the canal in panama?

They built the canal in Panama because back the the thought of a passage between two sea's was just a thought. Ever since the Spanish came in in the 1500's it was dreamed up. They could of built it in Nicaragua or Maybe Mexico because those were thin spreads of land. But an earlier treaty signed with Panama said that the US could have access to the land for travel if we kept them and Columbia protected.
