When the U.S. was formed, it was thought by many -- on BOTH sides of the Atlantic -- that a large nation could not survive without a mighty executive to resolve sectional disputes. Monarchies in Europe were happy to see that their predictions of such a nation falling part were coming true. Abraham Lincoln proved them wrong.

Along the way; he made the civil war into a war to end slavery (which even the Confederate leaders stated was the cause of the war), instituted the Homestead Act, chose to build a transcontinental railroad, and even gave federal protection to Yosemite Valley! Not bad for someone with less formal education than William Shakespeare.
