Beowulf requests a tower to be built for him as a final resting place to ensure that his legacy is remembered after his death. The tower, which he envisions on a cliff by the sea, symbolizes his heroic status and serves as a monument to his achievements, allowing sailors to recognize and honor him. This desire reflects the importance of reputation and remembrance in the culture of the time, highlighting Beowulf's commitment to leaving a lasting impact on his people.

In Anglo-Saxon society, it was known that there was no life after death. Cremation (burning of one's body into ashes) was used. Beowulf was cremated and his ashes were built into the walls of the tower that was his last request when he died. He wanted the tower to be built so men would know who he was. It's traditional in Anglo-Saxon epics for the hero to be famous and want his fame to outlive him.
The Tower of Babel was built because the descendants of Shem, Ham and Japeth wanted to make a name for themselves. They also didn't want to be split apart into the world
