The amazon river supports an extensive eco system and is a large source of fresh water that evaporates into the air and flows to the estuaries at its mouth supporting fish and other wildlife. The amazon region is a large carbon sink in that as the jungle grows quickly and constantly, the plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere (a greenhouse gas) and release O2, thus sequestering C (Carbon) in the plant material.
