because on a square tower one side could simply fall away from the rest; however in the round tower it was all one side so if one part wanted to fall over the other parts would be interlocking & would hold it in place.

Nantyglo Round Towers was created in 1816.
The defences of a concentric castle were round towers - It was harder for attackers to make round towers collapse. Unlike square towers they had no corners, which collapsed if holes were dug underneath the foundations.

The towers on early castles were square until it was realised that incoming projectiles, rocks from catapults and cannon balls did considerable damage where ever they hit the towers. To reduce the damage it was reasoned that round towers would only suffer major damage if struck in the middle. Shot striking off-centre would have some of the force, and hopefully the ball or rock, deflected. This turned out to be the case.
Round towers defended the castle against a cannon better than a wall with a corner. On a castle, a corner was a sort of weak point. Get it... Corner, point. Anyway, if a cannon hit a corner then two walls would collapse. And with a round tower, one wall would collapse. So not as much damage would be made. Also, most of the time there would be another round wall inside the tower so that if the cannon breaks through one wall it would have to go through another.
