While the fact that animals eat plants make it seem like animals shouldn't be around, they help the plants survive. The animals keep the population of plants under control. If animals were to disappear, then plants would grow everywhere. There's only so much space on the ground, so some of the plants leaves would be covered. The plants wouldn't be able to make food through photosyntesis, and they would die. Now usually plants die of old age. When they do, they are healthy, just dieing. If the plant were to die of starvation, it would hurt the soil a little as it goes back into the ground. This usually doesn't affect much, but lots of plants would be dieing, making the ground unhealthy. All the plants that survived would get sick and die.
