Because they have to put so much detail on little figures.

Market tolerence & abscence of competition; the prices are based on what people will pay rather than actual value or production costs. For what the game components are the prices are artificially high... but people still pay it so they still price it that high.

To some people it is interesting (like the books), some people like the table top game (miniatures).

If you know a bit about the Warhammer universe, some of the books are really interesting to read. For example:

* The Horus Heresy series are fairly interesting. It tells of how the Emperor of Mankind (the leader of mankind) gets betrayed by his sons, the Primarchs (leaders of whole armies, over 1000 Space Marines (elite modified humans) and their "tragic fall from grace."

* The Ciaphas Cain Series are pretty good. It's about a man, Ciaphas Cain, who is a hero of mankind, but in actual fact he is a coward and when he happens to get into huge trouble and saves himself it makes him look more like a hero but all he wants is the quiet life.

* Storm of Iron is a good book. Chaos Space Marines (traitors) take over a world (seige warfare).

* Dark Apostle and Dark Disciple are two books that are a bit dark but are a good read * Hellforged is a good book if you like both Space Marines (modified humans) and Necrons (an undying robotic race)

Remember that Warhammer is of Fantasy genre and Warhammer 40,000 is of Sci-Fi genre. So if you don't like any of these genres you probably won't like it.

It can be expensive if you try keeping up with the latest rules, army books and miniatures, but can be surprisingly cheap if you're just playing with friends and family and not planning on playing tournaments. Remember, you don't have to have the latest rules, army books and minis to have a great game with friends. Try the following ideas:

BOOKS

When a new rule book or army book is published, many players sell off the previous editions cheap on auction sites or at flea markets (I recently bought a 6th edition rulebook and 5 army books plus a previous edition 40k rulebook and 4 codexes for $15 Australian at a school fete). You can still play a great game with an older rulebook, especially considering that the changes from 6th to 7th were relatively minor. 6th edition army books also aren't greatly different from 7th edition. Second hand 6th edition books can be picked up at a fraction of the cost of 7th edition material. Another option is to buy the most recent rulebook and army book for your army and then buy older army books cheap for background for opposing armies.

MINIATURES

While the newest minis from Games Workshop look fantastic, you'll have just as much fun with older Games Workshop models picked up second hand and still be able to play official tournaments. If you don't intend to ever play tournaments, you can even buy non-GW miniatures cheap that look good massed up. If you do want the newest models, watch out when a new boxed set comes out, because many players buy it to add cheap units to their army and then sell off the other unwanted units cheap.

Remember, you don't even need real fantasy minis! Maybe you've already got a great collection of historical minis that could easily double for Brettonian, Empire, Chaos, Tomb Kings or Dogs of War armies. maybe you've got a huge collection of LEGO knights and pirates that you could stick to movement bases? The rulebook is a necessity, the army books are required if you want to use the different characteristics of each army, but the armies can be represented by anything if you use your imagination (and you opponent doesn't mind).

PAINTING/MODELING

For painting, non-GW paints are much better priced and don't suffer the same problems with drying out that the recent GW paints have suffered from. Many Warhammer-related forums discuss modeling paints in great detail. Just buy some water-based acrylic paints (in tubes preferably) from an art supply store and see if you like them.

While the terrain, buildings and trees at GW stores look amazing, you can always have fun making you own buildings from card, your own hills from polystyrene and your own trees from spray painted foliage. GW themselves promote modeling from scratch on their website and magazines/books. An old blanket over books on the kitchen table with fences from your old farm or zoo set and some painted 600ml milk cartons for houses can provide a great battleground.

In short, don't try keeping up with the latest books and minis. Use online auction sites and look for alternatives to GW paints and modeling material at art shops and modeling shops. You'll have just as much fun at a fraction of the cost.

A lot. A single tactical space marine squad is about almost £18. A entire warhammer army is about £500 or even more then £1000. Try start slow then build up

Answer

The reason given by Games Workshop is that injection moulding is a very expensive process. However, it can be argued that although the initial outlay is high, mass production means the individual price of each product is low. Games Workshop can afford to charge high prices because there is a very high demand for its service. People will continue to pay for the products because they want them. What you are paying for is also the service provided by the store, the packaging and of course the production of the mould. However, the cost of the plastic, per product is in fact very low. The recent price rises were blamed on rising raw material prices and increased overheads.
