ENA. ( re LA Times) Michael Davis
From a king and queen in spain.
ENA. This was a Spanish adaptation of Victoria, her real name. understandably they wanted to avoid confusion with the British Queen and Empress. Ena was of British extraction, by the way!
I suppose Spain got to name them because Queen Isabella of Spain supplied the three ships and a crew.
queen Isabella Christopher Columbus asked King Ferdinand & Queen Isabella of Spain for money to try out his idea of traveling west to reach the East. Queen Isabella refused Columbus at first. Later King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella gave Columbus three ships, a crew of about ninety men, and some money. The three ships were the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María.
She was the Queen of Castile and Leon and co-ruler with Fernando II King of Aragon. Spain only came into existence when all three kingdoms were inherited, and united, by one monarch, Carlos I of Spain in 1516.
Queen Isabella of Spain. She provided three ships for him to sail with.

Queen Isabel of Castilla and King Ferdinand of Aragon co-ruled Spain. They were each monarchs of their respective kingdoms and the kingdoms were NOT united therefore what they ruled was not technically Spain. Spain would not come into existence until all three kingdoms were inherited by their grandson Carlos I in 1516.I think the answer should be Isabel and Ferdinand even thought they were not technically King and Queen of Spain.
There was not a king and queen of Spain in 1495. Ferdinand II ruled Aragon and co-ruled Leon and Castile with Queen Isabel I. Isabel I was Queen of Castile and Leon and co-ruled Aragon with Ferdinand. They ruled those three kingdoms together but were only the Monarchs of their own kingdom(s). Consequently they were not the monarchs of Spain. Nor were their children. Spain was only unified when all three kingdoms were inherited by their grandson Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor in 1516. At that point it became one kingdom

Queen Isabella and King Ferninad were king and queen at the time of Columbus, they gave him permission to explore the new world. Isabel was Queen of Castile and Leon, two kingdoms in Spain. Ferdinand was the King of Aragon, a third kingdom in Spain. They married in 1469 and ruled all three kingdoms together. Eventually they defeated the last of the Moors that had invaded Spain 700 years earlier and drove them from Spain.
The country that supplied Christopher Columbus with ships in 1492 was Spain. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella were the monarchs in Spain at this time. His three ships were named the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.
