They are not in the Southwest and are only rarely referred to as a part of the southeast. Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and sometimes South Carolina are more often termed the South, the Deep South, Dixie, or politically as the Solid South.Florida is rarely included perhaps because it has become a haven for a very large number of transplanted Yankees or Snowbirds. Texas avoids inclusion primarily because it prefers to be associated with the West and ranching instead of plantations. Louisiana's cultural capital New Orleans fell early in the US Civil War to the Union and perhaps for that reason avoids inclusion. Arkansas is simply forgotten in the shuffle. Like the South the Southwestern US is difficult to accurately define. California is the first state generally excluded. The Southwest States are Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado Texas and Oklahoma with Texas and Oklahoma sometimes excluded.
