Goannas are found in a variety of habitats all over Australia. The smallest goanna lives in the deserts and reaches about 25 cm in length. The largest one also lives in the desert, and is actually known as a perentie, the name by which the Arrernte people know it.

Goannas are common in bushland and heavily treed areas, and they are also prevalent in coastal areas, living behind sand dunes. Basically, goannas can live anywhere where there is a ready food source.
