Puerto Rico does have a species of sand flea, locally called "maje". They are very small, smaller than gnats, but unlike gnats they bite. The bite is felt instantly and causes a small irritation at the side of the bite. The bite will cause intense itching for about 2-3 weeks. Its important to avoid scratching the affected area. Treat by blotting rubbing alcohol over the affected areas to promote the drying of the site. Then apply a topical insect bite treatment to further promote healing.

I think Christopher Columbus first explored Costa Rica during his fourth voyage to the Americas in 1502. He landed near what is now Puerto Limón on the Caribbean coast. After Columbus, Spanish conquistadors, such as Gil González Dávila, further explored and attempted to colonize the region in the early 16th century. These early explorers were followed by missionaries and settlers who gradually developed the area, although Costa Rica was considered a remote and difficult region due to its mountainous terrain and resistance from indigenous peoples.
