It depends entirely upon your carrier and what (they) consider "long distance", or not.
With Nextel/Sprint, since Hawaii is (in) the U.S. --- you SHOULD be able to call from Hawaii to Oregon, with NO long distance charges. You will be charged, of course, for the minutes used --- but not long distance. I have Nextel and am never charged "long distance". IF I call after 7pm, CST, I don't even have to pay minutes. IF I call during "prime time" (7am to 7pm --- except week-ends), then yes, I pay for minutes.
Again, it depends upon your carrier, their rules and regulations, and your particular "plan". Check with your carrier.
The only ways to get to Hawaii for free are if someone offers you their plane tickets, you win plane tickets to Hawaii for free, you go with a friend and the friend offers to pay for all of the plane tickets to Hawaii, or you sail across the ocean in your own boat. Other than that, there is no free way to get to Hawaii.
