William Becknell, a merchant and adventurer, was the first American to head for Santa Fe. In 1821, Becknell led a group from Franklin,Missouri, across the plains. When they reached Santa Fe, they found Mexicans eager to buy cloth and other goods. Other Americans soon followed Becknell's route. It became known as the Santa Fe Trail.

There were two of them: the first was the Texas Revolution (1835-1836) and the other one was the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The first one had to do with the ban of slavery in Mexico, which wasn't followed by American immigrants in Texas. This prompted a successful revolution by Texian settlers. The second had to do with American ambitions in the west, specifically, to get California at all costs.
