US President Lincoln was placed in an extremely difficult position when he took office. The South seceding, and no united group of Northerners. The entire nation was sectionalized with goals of their own. Any leader would make bad decisions under the pressures of a civil war. One mistake can be cited, among others, however, the Union went to war with the South and the US Army was not prepared for war. Lincoln was under political pressure to end the revolt of the South. He used armed force at Bull Run for example when the Union army was ill prepared to engage in a war.
