Did Captain Cook settle in Australia?

Captain Cook first caught sight of Australia in 1770 and after some exploration there continued on to New Guinea, Java and finally back to England.

Throughout his career as an explorer he always considered England home.

James Cook did not discover Australia. He was the first to chart the eastern coast, doing so in 1770, but Australia was first "discovered" by Dutch explorer Willem Jansz in 1606.

After charting the eastern coast, LieutenantJames Cook returned to England. He was promoted to captain, and went on to make two more significant voyages in the Pacific. He discovered the Hawaiian Islands, naming them the Sandwich Islands, and he was the first European to cross the Antarctic Circle, doing so twice.
