In 1821, just after winning its War of Independence, Mexico had an estimated population of 6 million. More than 80% of the population lived in rural areas and the Gross Domestic Product per capita was around US$4,600, equivalent to present-day Morocco. Nowadays (2013), Mexico is considered a developing market, where 78% of its population lives in urban areas, has a population of over 116 million and its economy is ranked as the 11th largest in the world, having an income per capita of around US$15,300.
