Old stereotypes are difficult to eradicate, and Mexico has its own: most people around the world believe Mexico is a small, underpopulated and arid country where most Mexicans wear sombreros, ride donkeys and live in adobe houses. This stereotype emanates from many photographs taken at the beginning of the 20th century (1910-1920), when many people from rural communities used to dress like that.

Nowadays, Mexico is the 11th largest economy and 11th most populated country in the world; in general terms it fares better than most developing countries and although it has its own share of problems like poverty, corruption and lack of education, it has a GDP per capita of US$15,300 which is a lot better than many countries like Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania or Brazil.
