Maryland and Virginia both ceded land to form the District of Columbia in 1789. The Maryland potion was Washington County, DC with Georgetown as its county seat, and the Virginia portion was Alexandria County, DC with Alexandria as its county seat. In 1846, Congress retroceded to Virginia portion, which is now Arlington county and part of the city of Alexandria. The present-day District of Columbia is made up of the Maryland portion and sits directly across the Potomac River from Virginia.
