Chaplains of the Order of Malta typically wear the same distinctive colors and attire associated with their role, which includes a black cassock with a white cape featuring the eight-pointed Maltese cross. In contrast, Chaplains to His Holiness usually wear a different style, often characterized by the use of a purple cassock. While both types of chaplains serve important roles within the Church, their vestments reflect their specific affiliations and duties.

SMOM and the Republic of Malta are two different things. One is a Order descendent from the grate Military orders that conquered the Holy land during the crusades. The other is an actual land mass (island) located below Italy. Malta was once property of SMOM. Malta is now a Republic and belongs to the Maltese People. SMOM don't have an actual country to govern and that puts them in a weaker position. Although SMOM do have diplomatic relations with most of the World governments and probably have more money than small Malta has. Between SMOM and the Republic of Malta, the Maltese would probably win, but that all depends on how the battle is fought.
The Templars were a military order in the literal sense- they fought in wars and crusades. Clergymen- especially the Pope are forbidden to take up arms- so to speak (Chaplains in the Armed forces are no exception- they do not carry weapons or have any training in their use- no target practice with the .45 for Chaplains) I also believe That Pope Alexander VI assumed his position ( he was of the Borgia family) long after the Templar order had dissolved.
