Knecht Ruprecht is still part of German tradition. He is the servant of Sankt Nicholaus (St Nicholas - Santa Claus).
St Nicholas' Day is on 6 December and in German tradition he and Santa Claus visit the homes of children in the night of 5/6 December to bring them presents. Traditionally he is depicted as a Moor and would carry Santa's sack, containing fruit and nuts for the good children and birch sticks for the bad children (for them to be smacked).
