Mexico is on the lower section of North America and shares its borders with the United States of America to the north, the Gulf of Mexico to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and with Belize and Guatemala to the southeast.

Brazil is in South America. It's the largest country in South America and it borders 10 other countries which are Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

Mexico is nowhere near Brazil: both countries are at least 2,750 Kilometers (1,720 miles) apart from each other, separated by all Central America as well as Colombia. Mexico is northwest of Brazil; conversely, Brazil is southeastof Mexico.

First, the common traits. Mexico and Brazil are Latin American nations, being at some point overseas colonies of European powers during the Age of Exploration: Mexico was conquered by Spain, while Brazil was settled by Portugal. Both became independent due to France invading Spain and Portugal during the Peninsular Wars (1808-1814). During the late 20th century both countries have become the most populated and largest economies of the Latin American region, and some of the largest economies in the world: Brazil is positioned at the 8th spot while Mexico is not far behind on the 12th place. This has put them on the forefront of the "Emerging Market" economic classification.

Now, on the differences. Mexico has a a large Spanish-speaking population (120 million) while Brazil has an even larger Portuguese-speaking population (202 million). The ethnic make up of Mexico is predominantly of mestizo (60%), Amerindian (30%) and white (9%) people while Brazilians are a mix of white (48%), mulatto (43%) and black (8%). Both Brazil and Mexico are federal presidential republics, but Mexico has 31 independent states and one federal district while Brazil has 26 such states and one federal district. Finally, while both economies are the largest of the Latin American region, Brazil has invested more heavily in extraction and export of Natural Resources (iron ore, soybeans, coffee) while Mexico has focused on manufacturing (machinery, electrical equipment, motor vehicles).
