Because they were close together, most contracted the new virus and some salmon escaped the farms, thus passing the virus to wild varieties and salmon in other farms. In a rush to make money, Chilean salmon businessmen destroyed their own livelihood. The industry is recovering but it will take time and in the meanwhile, countries like the US, Canada, Japan, are producing a lot of salmon
