Mexico is the eleventh largest economy in the world, with a GDP of US$2.05 trillion. It is also the eleventh in terms of population (116.9 million) and the thirteenth and fourteenth largest importing and exporting country (US$305 billion and US$294 billion, respectively) worldwide. It is considered an emerging market and a regional power, whose area of influence includes the Southwestern United States and most of Central America, mostly due to historic reasons - these areas used to belong to Mexico until 1848. As Mexico borders the United States, it is often overshadowed by the success of its northern neighbor, but in general terms, Mexico is one of the few developing countries with high probability of becoming an industrialized nation within the next 30 years: by 2050, with the correct reforms and a bit of luck, Mexico could become the fifth largest economy in the world, just behind China, the United States, India and Brazil.
