The Ural Mountains were formed like all other mountain ranges, with a collision. It began millions of years ago, at the time of Pangaea, when all the continents were joined as one colossal land mass. Throughout time, portions broke off. This was when and how mountains were formed. The Ural Mountains were caused by a collision between Western Kazakhstania and Siberia (now Kazakhstan and Siberia), and Baltica (now most of Europe). This was almost 400 million years ago.
