The Dawson's bee can grow up to 2.5 cm, or 1 inch, in length. Sizes vary according to the ecology where different colonies are found.

The Dawson's bee is a unique burrowing bee found only in isolated areas of Western Australia's outback. One of the largest bees in the world, the male is built for fighting and can grow to the same size as females, which is very rare in the insect world. These males fight over the females, and literally kill each other in a bee civil war that leaves only the females alive until the next generation of young bees emerge from their burrows.
