How did nationalism affect Mexico?

A tide of economic nationalism, or emphasis on domestic control of the economy, swept through Mexico and other Latin American countries.

• Local entrepreneurs set up factories to produce goods.

• The government nationalised resources and took over foreign owned industries.

In Mexico and in other Latin American countries, writers, artists, and thinkers began to reject European influences. Instead, they took pride in their own culture. Pride in ones own culture is called Culture Nationalism.

It just began to appear since the second half of the 18th century, as Mexico was conformed by a number of states making up a lightly-bonded federation. If Mexico had been more nationalistic early-on, maybe Texas and the rest of the southwest would still be part of their territory nowadays.

In fact, the deciding date was the Battle of Puebla or Cinco de Mayo (May 5th, 1862) where a lightly-armed Mexican militia defeated a more prepared French army that had not been beaten for almost 50 years. This small but important victory has stayed in the Mexican psyche until this day.
