Her Majesty's Government, or the Government of the United Kingdom, is the central government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Government is led by the Prime Minister, who selects the other members of the Cabinet. The Prime Minister and the other most senior Ministers belong to the supreme decision-making committee, known as the Cabinet.

Under the UK constitution, executive authority lies with the monarch. This authority is exercised only by, or on the advice of, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. The Cabinet members advise the monarch as members of the Privy Council. They also exercise power directly as leaders of the Government Departments.

The Government Ministers are usually all members of Parliament, and are accountable to it. The Government is dependent on Parliament to make primary legislation, which means that in practice a government must seek re-election at least every five years. The monarch selects the Prime Minister as the leader of the party most likely to command a majority in Parliament.

The British Parliament utilises the Westminster System, a parliamentary democracy which remains to this day the most widely used system of politics in the world. Most nations that practice the Westminster System are Commonwealths or former Commonwealths of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The current Prime Minister is David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, who was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II on 11 May 2010 following the UK General Election on 6 May 2010. The election failed to provide a decisive result, with the Conservatives as the biggest party within a hung parliament. A coalition government was formed on the 12th of May between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

The British government is organized so that it can muddle through. England has two political parties. There is Labour which Americans call socialists. There is the conservative party which Americans also call socialist. At least that is how it was. There is now a Supreme Court which is not quite Supreme. Unlike the American Supreme Court, it can not say, "This law is unconstitutional." It can send a law back to Parliament and say, "We have this case. We can not figure out how in the world this law applies. What in the world do you mean by this law?" That is something the Supreme Court of the United States has never done.

The Parliament consists of two bodies, The House of Commons and The House of Lords. The House of Commons is Elected; The House of Lords is Appointed. A bill begins in the House of Commons. It goes to the House of Lords where they try to figure out what it means and put it into simple English so it makes sense. The United States needs such an organization. Then it works with a committee from the House of Commons to further refine the bill. Then the bill comes back to the Hose of Commons. If it is passed, it becomes law.

The House of Commons is moderated by a speaker. That person keeps the members in line.

The head of the government is the Prime Minister, who is a member of the House of Commons as are the members of the cabinet. A member of the government could be a member of the House of Lords except that none of them are. They are selected by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is selected by the political party with a majority in the House of Commons. The monarch appoints that person to the post of prime minister. The prime minister and his cabinet run the government. The prime minister and the cabinet can change the organization of the government almost any way they wish.

In theory, if the government ceased to function the Monarch could take over the government. The likelihood of that happening is almost zero.
