Tankers are built to suit the locations that they pass through. If they have to pass through Panama Canal, then they build a tanker for that trade and build it as big as they can, to fit into the Canal. It is called PANAMAX Size.

Then comes the speed that it should travel to its destination. Say 24 knots, which will be about 24 x 1.15 land miles =27.6 miles per hour or 662.4 miles a day, not taking into considerations the wind and the waves.

A ship with a draft of 55 feet can travel from Vancouver via sea of Japan, Singapore- Colombo- Dubai in 17 days at a speed of 24 knots. Yes it takes 16 days to travel, but you also loose a day when the ship crosses the date line, that makes it 17.

The other route is through Panama.

Hope this information helps you.

Freddie.
