South America is absolutely beautiful!
People were looking for the Northwest Passage as a faster trade route to Asia by sailing through the Arctic region of North America, avoiding the long and dangerous journey around South America. Challenging ice conditions and navigation obstacles made this route difficult and perilous to navigate.
America wanted a canal in South America (more specifically, Panama) to make the trip around North America easier. Back then, they used ships as the primary source of transportation, and it was easier to build a canal in Panama then go ALL the way around South America. Basically, it's there because Americans wanted the trip to be easier and less extensive.
If you travel south of South America far enough, you will reach the continent of Antartica.
Other people from Scotland go to South America so it is up to you, if you want to go there then go.
