As of 2011, there are approximately 1200 Church of Scotland ministers serving parishes, plus a much smaller number (totalling less than 100) in non-parish appointments (such as Army Chaplains, Hospital Chaplains, University Professors and a few administrative staff at the Church of Scotland offices in Edinburgh). The total number of ministers is likely to drop to approximately 1000 over the next few years, mainly due to numeorous forthcoming retirements, a shortage of trainee ministers and financial difficulties affecting the Church of Scotland.
