The metro area of Mexico City - which is officially known as the Federal District (Distrito Federal) - is divided into sixteen districts or boroughs (delegaciones). These are second-level administrative divisions on par with Mexican municipalities. These however, are not autonomous (meaning there is no municipal president or major) but the district head of government (jefe delegacional) is elected by direct popular vote. The sixteen districts are:

  • Alvaro Obregon
  • Azcapotzalco
  • Benito Juarez
  • Coyoacan
  • Cuajimalpa de Morelos
  • Cuauhtemoc
  • Gustavo A. Madero
  • Iztacalco
  • Iztapalapa
  • Magdalena Contreras
  • Miguel Hidalgo
  • Milpa Alta
  • Tlahuac
  • Tlalpan
  • Venustiano Carranza
  • Xochimilco

Some interesting facts:

  • The Human Development Index (HDI) is a ranking created by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to measure countries or regions according to three basic population parameters: health, education and income. The Benito Juarez district has the highest HDI in Mexico, with an index of 0.9509. This means such district's quality of life is comparable to that of Norway (the country with the highest quality of life in the world).
  • On the other hand, the Milpa Alta borough has the lowest HDI from the group, with an index of 0.793. Such index is comparable to that of Russia or Brazil.
