The metro area of Mexico City - which is officially known as the Federal District (Distrito Federal) - is divided into sixteen districts or boroughs (delegaciones). These are second-level administrative divisions on par with Mexican municipalities. These however, are not autonomous (meaning there is no municipal president or major) but the district head of government (jefe delegacional) is elected by direct popular vote.
