The EU, as it exists now, was formed from the European Economic Community, which was created by the 1957 Treaty of Rome. The EEC came into being on 1 January, 1958.
The original members were Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany.
So, in one way Germany has 'always' been a member of the EU, and in another it has been a member for 53 years, as it is now 2011.
