The amount of money a server makes is determined a lot by his or her tips. If he or she is not getting paid hourly than the total amount of tips she is paid determines her hourly wages. Some waiters and waitresses make around $10-20/hour. Waiters also tend to make more money on weekend nights when the restaurant is busier and more customers are coming through.

Menu prices or whether the restaurant offers alcohol are other important factors in determining how much a server makes. The more expensive a customers tab is the typically the more tip a server will make. This is why many servers attempt to "up-sell" their customers by encouraging the purchase of appetizers or drinks. A basic tip is 15% of the total check, and a nice tip is 20% of the total check.
