The world's fifth-largest oil exporter Iran is storing millions of barrels of crude on tankers as it struggles to sell the product.

One source estimated Iran had crude on 19 very large crude carriers (VLCCs) and one smaller suezmax tanker, compared with around 12 VLCCs at the end of March.

A VLCC can store up to 2 million barrels of crude oil, while a suezmax can store up to 1 million barrels.

Iranhas 40 producing fields (27 onshore and 13 offshore) with the majority of crude oil reserves located in the southwestern Khuzestan region near the Iraqi border. Iran's crude oil is generally medium in sulfur content and in the 28°-35° API range. In 2008, Iran exported about 2.4 million bbl/d of oil, primarily to Asia and OECD Europe countries, making it the fourth largest exporter in the world.
