From a military perspective it was an unnecessary bombing strike because the Japanese Military Leaders were not persuaded to surrender after the atomic bombs were dropped. The atom bombs did the same amount of damage as the napalm bombings. It did not motive the enemy or render the enemy incapable to wage war and it hurt hundred's of thousands of civilians. It did not damage the amount of military targets as they would have like the bombs to do. The idea the Soviets across the sea in China was more of a military motivator for the Japanese Military Leaders. It took Emperor Hirohito to bring the war to an end since the Military Leaders of Japan were not going to surrender. HOWEVER, it did show the Soviets the Americans were "not afraid to use the big stuff". That was the phrase they used back then. It put the fear into the Soviets and hence the nuclear arms race seed was planted into the Cold War.
