The Massachusetts Bay Colony was organized as a Puritan settlement established in 1630, led by Governor John Winthrop. It operated under a charter granted by the English crown, which allowed for self-governance. The colony emphasized a theocratic system where church and state were closely intertwined, with church members holding significant political power. Additionally, the colony was structured into towns, each governed by local congregations and town meetings, reflecting its community-oriented ethos.
The people in Jamestown were more interested in finding gold and silver rather than spreading religion and growing crops while the Massachusetts Bay coloney was focused on spreading religion.
The first successful colony planted in what became known as New England was the Plymouth Colony in 1620. This colony was founded at Plymouth Rock in what is now Massachusetts by the Pilgrims from the Mayflower. The colony existed until 1691 when it was absorbed into the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The oldest existing political entity is Massachusetts which was founded as the Massachusetts Bay Colony at present day Boston in 1630.
