Imn Switzerland, it would appear St. Nicholas is divorced from the Christmas gift business as his holiday ( a church holiday) is celebrated on December 6th and is known as the Klauisjagen- roughly- Claus-Hunt. the associated parade features marchers clad in outsized hats resmebling Bishop"s mitres ( original St. Nicholas was a clergyman) but unknown in the US. Santa Claus in the Western ( e.g. US) has nothing do with the Klausjagen ( except the name) and the minor holiday has nothing to do with Christmas preparations. by the way St. Nicholas, is strictly speaking not even in Advent- which begins on the 8th of December as per Church Calendars. take heed.
