The Appennine Mountains start on the French border, follow the Liguria coast in the northwest and then run along the peninsula. The main plains are the plain of he river Po in the north which run from just west of Turin all the way to Venice plain of Apulia, which covers most of the heel; the plain of Lazio, just south of Rome; and the plains of Campania, north of Naples and around the bay of Salerno.
