Cheap is always a relative question. I arrived in Malta in 1993 and it was certainly very cheap then but supermarket prices now are actually higher than those in the UK. So I would say that food and drink from a supermarket are NOT cheap! However, eating and drinking in restaurants can still be good value - maybe the wages are very low! A main course plate of pasta can be had for around seven or eight euros - of course you have to be careful where you choose to eat!! St Julians can be upmarket but, as always, there are places where you can find good value - Bugibba, more of a downmarket tourist destination, has numerous good value restaurants.

Alcohol is generally very cheap especially beer (Malta has it's own local brews!)
