Utah is a western state.

The term "Midwest" refers to the states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin that are all located east of the Mississippi river. Some sources include Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri but those all form the western shoreline of the Mississippi. In some circles, Nebraska and Kansas are even included, which ignores that both are "Central Plains" states. The "Northern Plains" states are usually defined as being North and South Dakota.

These geographical reference labels were developed and taught widely in US schools during the 1800's and 1900's.

It is amazing to this contributor how Utah, which is almost entirely west of the Rocky Mountain range could be considered anything but "West".
