The origins of communism actually aren't very clear. Many people will say it began with Karl Marx in the 1840's. However there is evidence of communism existing much earlier. For example, the Shakers (a branch of Quakers where women assumed the leadership roles) believed in communist ideals. In 1747, the Shakers settled in New York and New Lebanon, both in the US. So, yes you could say it's possible that communism began in New York (and New Lebanon), but it's not very clear.
