So there were a large number of people born in 1796 say, who were still very much alive in 1861. In fact, ex-president Martin Van Buren ,who was 16 when Washington left office lived for more than a year after Lincoln became president. Tyler was almost 7 when Washington left office and he not only lived to see Lincoln elected but was elected to Confederate Congress.
