There are certainly animals known locally as 'tree bears' in Ghana but the correct name for these animals is the Tree Hyrax.

I was very familiar with the nocturnal calls of these creatures - a series of rather blood-curdling shrieks, rising in pitch - when I worked at Kwahu Hospital from 1965 to 1967. Being in the Nkakaw Forest Reserve, there was a good population of these animals and I briefly had one as a pet - and have photos of it.

Imagine a guinea pig scaled up to about the size of a small cat.
