In the beginning of the 1700s the United Kingdom was ruled jointly by William and Mary and then Queen Ann. When she died, King George I of Hanover became king. He preferred living in Germany to England. Still, he was willing to be King of the United Kingdom as long as the United Kingdom would send money to him in Germany. Parliament actually ruled the United Kingdom until 1763 with very little input from the king. Then George III took over.
