One can say "Hallo", "Heisann", "God dag," or simply "Hei," or "halla," depending on how formal or informal you are.

"Hei" is the normal phrase to use, but one can also use "Hallo".

Those are some of the most common greetings I can think of right now:

Norwegian - English

Simple words:

  • Hei - Hi
  • Hallo - Hello
  • God dag - Good day

Simple full greetings:

  • Hvordan går det? - How are you?
  • Lenge siden sist - It's been a while (directly: Long since last)

However, greetings in Norway is more than just chumping out some of those sentences, here is a quick course:

  • Do not greet people you don't know, only use simply greetings to shopkeepers etc.
  • Be VERY careful asking someone how they are when meeting someone, it is seemed as a shallow useless greeting by many.
  • Use first name, no titles (mr, mrs etc), in most cases.
  • A firm handshake, eye contact and a smile is the proper way to introduce yourself.
  • Kissing on cheeks, hugging etc is for friends and relatives only.

Also might add that if you are in a mountain, refrain from asking "how are you?" as a greeting, that's a direct insult (it would be like: I can see you are struggling, I'm doing better than you).
hallo
