No living person knows the mind of God, so it is impossible to give a real answer. Additionally, it is unclear which defeat of Israel the question is talking about. Is it referring to several of Saul's failed military actions in Biblical Israel, is it talking about the destruction of Israel by the Assyrians in the Biblical Period, or is it talking about the Arab-Israeli Wars (in some Arab perspectives, Israel lost the 1973 and 2006 wars).

If it is talking about the two Biblical Period losses, Jewish sources do have something to say. According to Talmud Megillah 10b, God does not rejoice in the demise of the wicked (which is what the Israelites were at the times of these defeats).

Relevant portion from Soncino (halakhah.com): Rabbi Joshua ben Levi introduced his discourse...with the following text: And it shall come to pass that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do good, so the LORD will rejoice over you to cause you to perish (Deut. 28:63). Now, does the Holy One, Blessed Be He, rejoice in the downfall of the wicked? Is it not written, as they went out before the army, and say, Give thanks unto the LORD for his mercy endures forever? (2 Chronicles 20:21)

And Rabbi Johanan said, "Why are the words 'for he is good' omitted from this Thanksgiving? (referring to Exodus Because the Holy One, Blessed Be He does not rejoice in the downfall of the wicked?" And R. Johanan further said, "What is the meaning of the verse: And one came not near the other all the night? (Exodus 14:20). The ministering angels wanted to chant their hymns but the Holy One, Blessed Be He said, 'The work of my hands is being drowned in the the sea, and shall you chant hymns?'"

Rabbi Eleazar replied, "He himself does not rejoice, but he makes others rejoice, as is indicated by the text: yasis and not yasus*, which proves this."

*This is a reference to the fact that verb in Deut. 28:63 is in the causative, i.e.
"he will cause to rejoice" as opposed to "he will rejoice", meaning that others will rejoice in this moment.

What is the etymology of Israel?

The name of Israel comes from Jacob son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham, Jacob is another word or name for Israel. Jacob had 12 sons and those 12 sons represent the 12 tribes of Israel, in other words the nation of Israel started with the birth of Jacob and the promise that God (YHWH) made to Abraham. In time the Jews invaded the land of canaan wich wasn't a nation it was just a region with different civilizations scattered all around it after they defeated all these civilizations they established in the region and then Israel as a nation was born, so you can say that the first nation established in the canaan region was Israel wich then was divided in two kingdoms, in the north side was the kingdom of Israel and in the south side was the kingdom of Juda wich made the nation of Israel.
