The first true civilization in the region were the Olmecs, who began to found extensive cities since 1,200 BC.

In fact, the Aztecs were the last pre-columbian civilization to settle in Mexico, who founded their first city on March 13, 1325 and in less that two centuries later, dominated most of central and southern Mexico.
