Up to 35% of the population lives in poverty. This means some areas in Mexico are truly an eyesore. However, you should note that the US isn't much better either: 47 million or 15% of the US population is also poor by the same definition.

Mexico is fighting the War on Drugs since 2006. This means some regions in the country have suffered the brunt of violence between drug cartels and Mexican security forces, resulting in more than 60,000 dead since such conflict began.

Although Mexico is not the Wild West many news and movies mistakenly depict, it has its share of corruption among public officers. The United Nations calculates almost 9% of Mexico's GDP (or US$102 billion lost for 2011) is lost to corruption and inefficiencies.
